I volunteer for a group that helps people in need. And I have fallen into the trap — and I was so ashamed when God called this to my attention — of judging them.
It is all too easy to feel superior to them, because I am not in their situation. But that is not through my own efforts; it is only because of God’s blessings. “There but for the grace of God go I” is quoted by so many people because it is true — it is only because of God’s grace that I have received whatever I have in this life.
Paul addressed this problem in his letter to the Corinthians, who were squabbling over which church leader was best. God is the only one who is important, he chided them, and their focus should be on him, not on themselves. “Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow,” he wrote.
Arguing about which person is more important is acting in a worldly manner, Paul said, and not how Christians are supposed to act. “I care very little if I am judged by you or any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself,” Paul wrote.
Wow! Another truth that hit me right between the eyes! All those times I have said negative things to myself. “I’m so stupid.” “I’m so fat.” ‘I’m so...” But you get the drift. Of course, none of you have ever said things like that to yourselves, have you?
The Bible says that only God knows our hearts and minds. The worldly version of this tells us not to judge somebody until we have walked a mile in their shoes. It is not my place to criticize another person’s choices. Jesus said to love others — unconditionally. He did not throw stones at that sinful woman who had been dragged before him or even criticize her, just expressed confidence that she could change her ways. After first reminding her accusers that they were not without sin themselves.
Dear Lord, I pray that you will help me show kindness to everyone, including myself. Help me not to think or speak critical things about anyone, including myself, for we are all your creations and all beloved by you. None of us is perfect, but in Christ, we are all forgiven. Amen.
